OVERVIEW

Join us on our Civil Rights Tour as we learn the history of our country’s fight for civil rights and how it affects and impacts us today. Your group will have the opportunity to visit the Martin Luther King Jr. Historic Site, the National Center for Human and Civil Rights Museum, the Freedom Riders National Monument, and more!

ITINERARY

DAY 1: TRAVEL DAY / MLK NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE / INTERNATIONAL CIVIL RIGHTS WALK OF FAME / APEX MUSEUM

  • Board your bus and begin your journey to Atlanta, GA
  • Grab lunch on your own and meet your JE Guide
  • Spend your afternoon at Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site and take self-guided tour through King’s boyhood home, Ebenezer Baptist Church, and his final resting place
  • Walk along the International Civil Rights Walk of Fame and learn highlights of the men and women, both black and white, who were brave warriors of justice
  • Take a guided tour of the APEX Museum for the chance to connect African, Africa-American diaspora, and Black Atlanta History
  • Walk through Centennial Olympic Park, Grant Park, or Historic Midtown depending on arrival time
  • Dinner
  • Check into your hotel and group devotions / debrief

DAY 2: NATIONAL CENTER FOR CIVIL & HUMAN RIGHTS MUSEUM / FREEDOM RIDERS NATIONAL MONUMENT / 16TH STREET BAPTIST CHURCH / KELLY INGRAM PARK

  • Breakfast and devotions
  • Check out of your hotel
  • Spend your morning taking a self-guided tour of the National Center for Civil and Human Rights to learn about American Civil Rights and how it connects to today’s struggle for Global Human Rights
    • STEM-related worksheets are available for students/teachers to complete as they journey through this museum
  • Lunch
  • Board your bus and begin your journey to Birmingham, AL
  • Stop in Anniston, AL and witness the location of the Freedom Riders attack and discuss the events that transpired
  • Take a tour of the 16th Street Baptist Church, the site of a white supremacist bombing that took place in the 1960’s*
  • Head to Kelly Ingram Park to learn of its rich history and learn about the Civil Rights leaders whose statues populate this park
  • Dinner
  • Check into your hotel and participate in group devotions*Pending church schedule

DAY 3: TRAVEL DAY / BIRMINGHAM CIVIL RIGHTS INSTITUTE / BETHEL BAPTIST CHURCH

  • Breakfast, devotions, and check out of your hotel
  • Entrance into the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute to learn further about the struggles of the Civil Rights Movement
  • Travel to the historic Bethel Baptist Church and discuss the tragedies that transpired here throughout history
  • Stop by the Negro Southern League Museum, Dynamite Hill, Gaston Motel, or other historic sites if time allows
  • Debrief your time together as a group and board your bus to begin your journey home
