OVERVIEW
As our nation’s capital, the Washington DC area has become a confluence of African American history, heritage, and culture. From learning about Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad to visiting the gravesite of Thurgood Marshall, one of the NAACP lawyers during the Brown vs. Board of Education hearing at the Supreme Court. Walk in the footsteps of Representative John Lewis, and stand where Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gave his “I Have a Dream” speech. This tour will guide your group through history and stories to learn how these events and people impact us today.
ITINERARY
DAY 1: TRAVEL DAY / NATIONAL MUSEUM OF AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY & CULTURE
- Arrival
- Afternoon visit to the National Museum of African American History and Culture
- Dinner
- Evening visit to the Tidal Basin Memorials highlighting the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial
DAY 2: HARRIET TUBMAN UNDERGROUND RAILROAD VISITORS CENTER
- Breakfast
- Depart for Maryland
- Morning visit to the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Visitors Center
- Lunch
- Afternoon guided bus tour of additional sites related to Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad
- Return to DC
- Dinner
- Evening visit to the Lincoln Memorial with time to read Martin Luther King’s “I Have A Dream” speech
DAY 3: ARLINGTON NATIONAL CEMETERY / AFRICAN AMERICAN CIVIL WAR MEMORIAL & MUSEUM
- Breakfast
- Morning visit to Arlington National Cemetery highlighting the gravesites of Medgar Evers and Thurgood Marshall
- Lunch
- Afternoon exterior visit to the White House
- Afternoon visit to the African American Civil War Memorials and Museum
- Dinner at Bens Chili Bowl
- Evening visit to the Vietnam, Korea, and WWII Memorials
DAY 4: CAPITOL HILL / TRAVEL DAY
- Breakfast
- Morning visit to Capitol Hill with visits to the US Capitol, Supreme Court, and Library of Congress
- Depart
